      Inventor 2015 Service Pack 2

Autodesk has just released Service Pack 2 for Inventor 2015.

This Service Pack 2 addresses multiple issues for Inventor 2015.

Here is what is addressed in Service Pack 2:

      Stress Analysis
      • The precision of pressure is inaccurate when you convert it from MPa to psi.
      • Inventor unexpectedly exits while working in the Stress Analysis addin. This occurs when finishing a simulation and reading back simulation results.
      Security
      • Service Pack 2 addresses POODLE SSL v3 vulnerability
      API
      • API GraphicsIndexSet.Add method has performance regression since Inventor 2015.
      Application Functionality
      • Inventor hangs when saving a file after you expand and collapse the browser.
      • Unable to export files to CAD format in particular machines.
      • The browser does not automatically reposition when one monitor is missing.
      • Inventor performance is poor if you run Inventor on dual monitors or under customer DPI setting.
      • Non-English Inventor unexpectedly exits when you type the letter 'a' in Communication Center.
      • The last opened file might not be listed in the Recently Used tab after resetting the ribbon.
      • A project cannot be changed using the dropdown menu in My Home when an opened document is closed using undo.
      • Non-localized strings display within the context menu of the Home page.
      • Inventor 2015 freezes on startup: The message "AutoCAD Component has Stopped Working" displays.
      • View manipulation does not work as expected with 3D device if Rotation is disabled.
      • Manually changing the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion19.0\System\Preferences\File\CefOptions setting in the registry is no longer required.

      • Sheet metal solid body is not selectable under Select Body Priority in the Assembly environment.
      • Some defined Assembly Joint Limits are unexpectedly lost when computing large amounts of existing Joints.
      • Assembly constraints that specifically Insert type constraint, sometimes provides a wrong direction when based on a normal vector of a selected circular edge. This issue was caused by using incorrect precision to compare direction of the two vectors in order to decide a final constraint direction. Editing existing Insert constraints may switch the constraint direction to the opposite direction.
      • Locked Design Views that are activated while occurrences are suppressed will no longer turn unsuppressed instances to invisible later.
      • When a part is inserted in an assembly, the center of gravity is made visible and cannot be turned off.
      • Assembly Joints that are created using the Substitute LOD of the components will fail sometimes when activating the Master or Substitute LOD.
      • A locked view representation when changing a component to invisible does not immediately update the browser icon to gray.
      Content Center
      • Some materials are empty in custom Content Center family after migration from R2012.
      Drawing Manager
      • Drawing views are out of sync with Assembly data.

      • The order in BOM is not correct when sorting components by Item.
      • Data row height cannot be adjusted by dragging the data cell line up and down in the Partslist table, general table and revision table.
      Engineer's Notebook
      • Inventor unexpectedly exits after undoing an Engineering note several times until the part that includes the engineering notebook is closed with two components.
      Enhanced Visualization
      • Inventor prompts error message when creating a drawing view because of a bad front plane definition.
      • The preview quality is not good when creating a drawing base view from a small part.

          AutoCAD 2016 - What's New

Here is the full list of What's New in AutoCAD 2016.

          File Tabs

The New Tab drawing file tab has been renamed to Start and remains persistent as you create and open additional drawings.

          Layouts

Layouts now support drag and drop to move or copy layouts to positions that are hidden in the overflow menu. As you drag the selected layouts to the right or left edge of the layout tabs they automatically scroll enabling you to drop the layouts into the proper position.

          Status Bar

The status bar can now automatically wrap onto two rows when there are more icons than can fit into a single row. Isolate objects and Lock UI have been added to the status bar customization menu.

          Revision Clouds

The Revision Cloud tool is enhanced in AutoCAD 2016 to provide more flexibility. It is accessible from the Annotate ribbon panel and includes 3 methods of creation: Rectangular, Polygonal, and Freehand.

          Dim Command Enhancements

The DIM command is significantly enhanced in AutoCAD 2016 and is now accessible from the Ribbon. The DIM command automatically creates appropriate dimensions based on the type of objects you select. A preview as you pass the cursor over those objects enables you to see the resulting dimension before you actually create it.

          Text Wrap in Dimensions

When editing dimension text, a width sizing control is displayed above the text enabling you to specify the width for text wrapping.

          Layers for Dimensions

A new Dimensions layer is automatically added to the drawing when dimensions are created.

          Text

A new Text frame property has been added to Mtext objects enabling you to create a border around the text.

          Closed Polyline Snapping

By enabling the existing Center object snap to snap to the geometric center of a closed polygon/polyline. Tooltips distinguish the Center osnap from the Arc Center osnap which is displayed for arcs and polyline arc segments.

          Move/Copy Enhancement

When you move or copy a large number of objects together in the 2D Wireframe visual style in AutoCAD 2016, move function preview is generated quickly allowing you to move the selected objects freely without significant lag.

           Section Object

The section Plane tool creates a section object that acts as a cutting plane through 3D objects including solids, surfaces, meshes, regions and now point clouds. The sections object's type can be set to represent a simple cutting plane, a bounded area, or volumetric area. A new Slice type has been added to the section object. The Slice type generates a thin cut through the model that always contains parallel front to back section planes.

These are just some of the upgrades and enhancements in AutoCAD 2016. When I receive the full breakdown, it will be posted on the site.

          Autodesk Perpetual Licensing Changes

Autodesk just announced changes to their licensing of software for the future. Autodesk is gradually transitioning new software purchases for their products to subscription options only. In the first phase of this transition, new seats of standalone desktop software products will generally be available only as a Desktop Subscription beginning February 1, 2016. Desktop Subscription products provide a simplified product management and deployment experience, and makes it easier to introduce new tools and technology into the workflow with lower upfront cost and the ability to pay as you go. Desktop Subscription is available on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis, and Autodesk also plans to introduce a new multi-year Desktop Subscription offering.

Customers who have purchased a perpetual license prior to February 1, 2016, will be able to continue to use those licenses.  Customers with Maintenance Subscription on those perpetual licenses will continue to receive corresponding benefits for as long as the subscription remains active.

Here is a list of products that will be affected by this change:

        • 3ds Max
        • AutoCAD
        • AutoCAD LT
        • AutoCAD for Mac
        • AutoCAD LT for Mac
        • AutoCAD Architecture
        • AutoCAD Electrical
        • AutoCAD Mechanical
        • InfraWorks
        • Inventor
        • Inventor Professional
        • Inventor LT
        • Maya
        • Maya LT
        • MotionBuilder
        • Mudbox
        • Navisworks Simulate
        • Navisworks Manage
        • Revit Architecture
        • Revit MEP
        • Revit Structure
        • Revit LT

        • What is Desktop Subscription? Does Desktop Subscription use the cloud to store applications and data? Desktop Subscription gives access to Autodesk software—the same full version as with a perpetual license—but with a flexible, pay-as-you-go approach for a software budget that’s easier to manage. Desktop Subscription provides benefits such as Basic Support, access to the latest software and product enhancements, and in some cases, access to select cloud services.  The desktop software application delivered through Desktop Subscription as well as associated user data continue to be stored on a local machine, and any usage of Autodesk cloud services is optional.

Does this mean customers will lose the ability to use existing software purchased under a perpetual license?
No, if a customer already has a perpetual license or purchases a new perpetual license at any time before February 1, 2016, that license doesn't go away.  They still retain the perpetual license to that software and can continue to use it in accordance with their perpetual license agreement. If the software product is covered by Maintenance Subscription, they will also continue to receive their Maintenance Subscription benefits.

Will perpetual licenses for Autodesk Design & Creation Suites still be available for purchase after February 1, 2016?
New perpetual licenses for Autodesk Design & Creation Suites and other suite offerings will continue to be offered beyond February 1, 2016. Any transition to a subscription-only based offering for Suites after that time will be communicated well in advance.

What happens to my perpetual licenses on Maintenance Subscription?
The elimination of perpetual licenses on Feb 1, 2016 only applies to new purchases of perpetual licenses.

Customers with current Maintenance Subscription contracts after Feb 1, 2016, will continue to receive their Maintenance Subscription benefits.

What is Autodesk doing to make this an easy transition for you?Autodesk is doing several things to make the transition to Desktop Subscription as smooth as possible:
          • Providing the time needed to assess options and make plans by providing a full year of advance notice of changes to come
          • Allowing Maintenance Subscribers to continue to renew their Maintenance Subscriptions and receive/access the benefits of their Maintenance Subscription
          • Making Autodesk Account the one place to manage all of your products, subscriptions and services
          • Providing the ability to lock in your subscription rate by introducing the option of a multi-year Desktop Subscription offering
