Autodesk Labs - 2D to 3D Tool for Inventor ReReleased

Back in September, Autodesk Labs retired the 2D to 3D Tool for Inventor. They must have had quite a bit of feedback wanting to bring it back because they have now ReReleased it back onto the Labs website. The only downfall is it is only supported by Autodesk Inventor 2013 64-bit.

The 2D to 3D Tool for Inventor allows the Inventor user to quickly create 3D models of 2D designed parts. The 2D to 3D Tool automatically transforms drawing views into orthogonal sketches, significantly streamlining the preparation of 2D views for 3D uses.

Inventor of the Month - November 2012

Autodesk has named a group of industrial design students enrolled in the Automotive Design course at Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico City for developing the award-winning Aurora green concept car as part of their curricula. For their efforts, the students have been named the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for November.

The Aurora project focused on the challenge of designing a car that would be suitable for megacity environments where large, growing populations can quickly contribute to pollution and environmental strain.

Rather than relying on a fuel-hungry central combustion engine, the Aurora uses hybrid propelling technologies to power the car. Magnetic propulsion provides power for city driving, while the car’s suspension converts the car’s upward and downward motion into energy that can be stored in rechargeable batteries connected to localized motors on the rear wheels.

The concept car also features virtual interactive controllers connected to smart traffic clearinghouses, to automated driving systems, and to the houses and offices of the users - representing an embrace of developing automotive trends such as smart traffic systems and autonomous transport.

The student team - including Julio Valenzuela, Monserrat González, Pablo Ramírez and Carlos Vásquez - used Autodesk SketchBook Pro software to create digital sketches and Autodesk Alias Design software to create virtual models of the Aurora concept car. Virtual animations were created using Autodesk Maya software.

The students also used Autodesk Inventor software to create 3D digital models and motion animations of the mechanical systems and infrastructure of the concept car, as well as to create models of large avenues in Mexico City that represented a typical megacity driving environment.

In July 2012, the Aurora concept car was chosen as the final project to participate in the "Innovative Mobility Solutions (IMS)" global contest organized by the General Motors Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education (PACE) program in Shanghai, China.

The team from Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey won the important “Best Creative Research” and “Best Concept Development” prizes, reflecting the high design quality and development tool expertise achieved by the students.

Have an Idea - Request It

Do you have an idea for a new feature or an enhancement to an existing feature in your favorite Autodesk software? Where are you supposed to submit your idea to Autodesk? That has always been a good question, if you didn't know where to go, it was very hard to find the right area.

Here is where you would normally go for all ideas,

Old, Hard to Find Contact Page for Ideas

Well, Autodesk has realized this was a hard place to find and is now setting up a standard for a place to request you new ideas, IdeaStation.

There are some that are already setup and more are on the way. They are basically another area for the forums, so if you are an Autodesk Forum member, which you definitely should be, you can submit your ideas to your hearts content. If you don't have any ideas, you can still go there, look through other peoples ideas and give Kudo's, which basically makes it more aware for the respective Autodesk teams to see the ideas that are most requested.

  • Autodesk Factory Design Suite
  • Autodesk Inventor
  • Autodesk Inventor ETO (Engineer-to-Order)
  • Autodesk Product Design Suite
  • Autodesk PLM 360
  • Autodesk Vault

  • If the software you have an idea for isn't in the above list, you need to go to the old method until they get it setup in the forums. Link provided above.

So go there now and get requesting your ideas, you never know, your bright idea might become a new feature in a future release.

Inventor of the Month - October 2012

Autodesk has named MariCorp as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for October 2012, a nationwide leader in the boat dock industry that has expanded from 6 to 45 employees in the past 6 years, for using Autodesk PLM 360 to streamline project management and Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD software as part of Autodesk Product Design Suite to improve their designs.

As a result of implementing Autodesk software, the fast-growing company, founded by its 25-year old CEO Scott Fitzpatrick while he was still in college, has been able to respond to bids more quickly, execute designs more effectively and efficiently scale its organization.

Autodesk PLM 360, a cloud-based product lifecycle management solution, has made project management and collaboration across the MariCorp organization much more efficient. The engineering department receives all the forms, images and notes for each project as attachments inside PLM 360. In return, the sales team can clearly see how the dock designs look and be absolutely clear when requesting changes. Requests for proposals that once initiated a week of frantic design activity now routinely wrap up in three days.

MariCorp estimates that the use of new design tools combined with easy access to accurate project information has helped reduce rework tenfold. Designs are noticeably more complete at the outset, leading to substantially less confusion or second-guessing from the manufacturing shop floor, all the way to final installation.

MariCorp is comfortable working in the cloud and, in addition to pursuing implementation of Autodesk Inventor iLogic, looks forward to maturing our design practices further to embrace cloud services like Autodesk 360 Optimization and to becoming even faster at creating more competitive and compelling designs.

Replacing its legacy design tools, MariCorp retooled its engineering processes around Autodesk Inventor software to build its dock designs and AutoCAD software to complete its drawings.

The company also uses Autodesk Showcase software to create photo-quality 3D illustrations of new design concepts. These renderings help customers to see a dock design in the context of its surroundings and understand the benefits and tradeoffs of the proposal more clearly than by viewing 2D sketches or blueprints.

AutoCAD for Mac - Mountain Lion Updates

Here is one for all of you Apple Mac product users. Autodesk has released a number of Service Packs for the AutoCAD for Mac lineup, which includes AutoCAD 2013, AutoCAD LT 2013, AutoCAD 2012. In addition to resolving issues reported by the Customer Error Reporting (CER) utility and other general problems identified since the previous versions were made available, these service packs add support for OS X 10.8, aka-Mountain Lion.

New Apple guidelines require that software packages installed on OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) meet certain security standards. These restrictions mean that you may be unable to do a fresh install or re-install of your existing AutoCAD for Mac products on OS X 10.8. In that case, depending on your product, you should either download the full version of AutoCAD 2012 for Mac or download the trial Mac versions of AutoCAD 2013 or AutoCAD LT 2013. These downloads have been updated to include the latest service packs and conform with new Apple security requirements.

Note: The service pack for AutoCAD LT 2013 is not for the AutoCAD LT 2013 purchased from the Mac App Store. That version will receive the new updates directly from the Mac App Store when it becomes available.

Inventor of the Month - September 2012

Autodesk has named BMC - a leader in the Turkish automotive industry - as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for September 2012 for using Autodesk Inventor as part of the Autodesk Product Design Suite to improve design and production processes at its main plant in Izmir, Turkey.

These productivity enhancements allow the company to more efficiently produce a wide range of vehicles, from light and heavy trucks, to buses and military vehicles, which are supplied to international as well as local markets, helping BMC move towards becoming a global brand.

During R&D and design stages, the company uses 3D modeling, visualization and simulation applications included in Autodesk Product Design Suite Ultimate 2013 and Autodesk Product Design Suite Premium 2013. In addition, BMC utilizes AutoCAD LT 2013 for 2D drafting and detailing, as well as Autodesk Revit Architecture for architectural design purposes.

To start, BMC is able to more easily identify potential assembly problems or interferences between product parts during the digital modeling phase by using Autodesk Inventor software. Sophisticated simulation and analysis tools, such as the plastic injection molding simulation and finite element analysis (FEA) features in Autodesk Inventor Professional software, help to further optimize the design process.

Once a product part or assembly is complete, Autodesk Product Design Suite also plays an important role in helping to create molds that are free of defects the first time around. Mold creation is one of the most costly processes for manufacturing companies.

Inventor of the Month - August 2012

Ellis Furniture leverages Autodesk Inventor software to offer greater levels of product customization to its customers and create high-quality furniture that fits their needs. (Photo: Business Wire)Autodesk has named Ellis Furniture, a U.K. based furniture company in business for more than a century as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for August 2012 for using Autodesk Inventor as part of Autodesk Product Design Suite to offer greater levels of product customization in significantly less time.

This speed enables Ellis to rapidly explore a number of design options for its customers, ranging from luxury hotels to government institutions, and create high-quality furniture that not only fits their precise needs, but is designed to last a lifetime.

Using Autodesk software, the company estimates that it is able to clarify initial product design concepts with customers 20 percent faster and establish material sources and material costs 30 to 40 percent faster. Ellis’ manufacturing process, including generating a bill of materials (BOM) and preparing design files for computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools with Autodesk software, takes 80 percent less time.

StudentThe rules-based design automation capabilities of Inventor software enable an efficient workflow where intelligent data behind each furniture design is fed into Ellis’ ERP system. This fully digital process eliminates manual data entry, reduces errors and speeds up turnaround time, even as the company gives its customers greater freedom to express their design intent and personalize their furniture offerings.

When one of its larger university customers required a vast array of size and color permutations for a new range of furniture, Ellis was able to develop a base model in Inventor software and tailor it until the university was satisfied. Likewise, when one of its military customers urgently needed a new range of bedroom furniture, Ellis was able to complete the models in Autodesk Inventor within a week and go straight into manufacturing with total confidence and without delays on the shop floor. Two weeks later, the units were being shipped to the other side of the world.

    Inventor 2013 Update 2 Released

Autodesk just released Update 2 for Inventor 2013. As previously reported with Update 1 for Inventor 2013, this update is not a Service Pack, just a collection of fixes that will come before the Service Pack is released.

This Update addresses multiple issues for Inventor 2013. This Update take the place of Update 1 and includes all changes contained in Update 1.

Here is what is addressed in Update 2:

    • User .xml file migrates to the material/appearance library incorrectly
    • Creating a Presentation will create duplicate appearance styles
    • Customer material/appearance library contains duplicate asset names after migration
    • During Content Center update, Custom library is removed if a corresponding material is missing in the Inventor Material Library
    • Feature color override changes after a rebuild all in derived parts
    • Migration of Inventor library creates a duplicate material when an identical material exists in the target library
    • Multiple stability issues
    • Nonexistent contacts detected between geometry may cause discrepancies in simulation results
    • Occasional low memory warning message erroneously displays during solve of simulation
    • File size increases significantly by FEA result file being embedded
    • The lib file (.adsklib) locked by Inventor can't be checked in and synced to new version from Vault
    • Update, Save, and Purge style dialog boxes do not set the default library as the active library
    • After changing the material in one subassembly, the material in another subassembly may also change
    • After placing and refreshing content center standard components, an incorrect material is assigned
    • CER: Suppressed forces from legacy simulations from Dynamic Simulation sometimes cause exit when save
    • CER: Unexpected exit occurs when generating iAssembly member after deleting a component with previous work-axis dependency
    • CER: Unexpected exit occurs when selecting a top assembly node in the browser while launching a material browser dialog box
    • CER: Unexpected exit on close of new part file when all Add-Ins are unloaded
    • CER: Unexpected exit when using call Document.SaveAs to publish an Inventor file to a DWF file
    • CER: Unexpected exit when calling GetHIconFromBitmapSource
    • CER: Unexpected exit when copying components in assembly
    • CER: Unexpected exit when deleting appearance and sorting
    • CER: Unexpected exit when moving a sketch
    • CER: Unexpected exit when re-enter the stress analysis environment with particular weldment assemblies
    • CER: Unexpected exit when returning to construction mode after saving in simulation mode
    • CER: Unexpected exit with Grip Snap command when clicking Esc after Free Drag
    • Hotfix - DL19384851 (Inventor Vault Add-In) - Inventor 2013 unexpectedly exits when checking in files

Inventor 2013 Favorite New Sketch Enhancements

Here I am going to show you what I consider my favorite new Sketch Enhancements for Inventor 2013.

    1. Origin Plane Display
    • When you start the Create 2D Sketch command, the origin planes display. Pick the edge or face of a plane to begin a new 2D sketch.

    2. Set Sketch Scale by the First Dimension
    • The first dimension in the first part sketch determines the scale of the sketch.
    3. Create a two-point-center rectangle
    • Use the Two Point Center Rectangle command to create a rectangle defined by a center point and a vertex.

    4. Create a three-point-center rectangle
    • Use the Three Point Center Rectangle command to create a rectangle defined by a center point and two points that define the size and direction of the rectangle sides.
    5. Dimension arc length
    • In the sketch enviroment, use the Dimension command, Arc Length option to add arc length dimensions.
    6. Display of fully constrained sketches
    • A new icon is add to the Part browser to indicate fully constrained 2D sketches. In the Assembly enviroment, the indicator icon updates its appearance when you exit the Sketch enviroment. In the Part enviroment, it updates interactively as you add or remove constraints.

    7. Sketch Enviroment Status Bar
    • Commands that were previously located on the right-click menu are now available on the Status Bar in both the 2D and 3D sketch enviroments.
      • Command on the 2D Status Bar:
        • Snap to Grid
        • Show all Constraints
        • Hide all Constraints
        • Dimension Display
        • Slice Graphics
        • Show All Degrees of Freedom
        • Hide All Degrees of Freedom
      • Command on the 3D Status Bar:
        • Dimension Display
Here is also a YouTube Video showing all of the above mentions.
